Did anyone attend an Airstream Rally for the 4th? If you have any great photos, would love to see them!
It’s so exciting to us Airstream enthusiasts to see a whole bunch of them together.. true Americana (;

california coast driving..

2

For anyone moving North to South like we did, here’s another great travel route. After you drive the Avenue of the Giants through Humboldt Redwoods State Park take the 101 to Hwy 1 which travels right along the California coast. The scenery is spectacular and stretches on for miles..

the loo.

2

Does this happen to any of you?? You get started on a project, you fully intend to document every step of the way, you get to the end and realize..oh yeah, it would have been super helpful to take the very first photo, you know.. the before shot?! Of all of our renovations on eddie this before shot is the one I regret not having the most. This project was the one that we were worried the most about and we can’t even show you exactly why. Instead I’ll do my best to briefly describe it.. behind the toilet is made of a thick plastic (?) type material that makes up the sink, the walls, the shower, almost the entire bathroom and the first owner (we’re owners number 3) roughly cut out two huge gaping strips (to access the plumbing we can only assume) that were very deep and ragged and ugly. Replacing the entire bathroom wall/shower/sink was not an option and we weren’t sure for the longest how to fix it.. it lingered and was one of our very last projects. So imagine in the above ? photo two deep slashes about an inch to two inches wide and ten inches long and that is where we get started.

First we (and when I say we I should say he.. because I was merely observer and dust collector, the hubby did all the mastermind work that made us have a good as new wall behind the loo) but anyway, first Great Stuff Spray Foam was used to fill in as much of the gaps as possible.. from the surface of the plastic to the wall behind was about an inch and a half. Then Triple Flex was layered multiple times over the gashes. Between layers Sean would sand to see how many more layers were needed to create a smooth background (although the gaps were covered it was still uneven where the plastics rough edges jutted out). The above photo was taken after one coat, below after several (although it’s hard to see a difference in either). The triple flex itself is also not smooth, but sands down quite easily.

The hubby having his very own Dexter moment….a sander instead of a blade though (;

After many coats and much sanding, we’re smooth and primed.

Multiple layers of paint later (high gloss for easy bathroom cleaning) and you can’t tell there were ever holes at all… I can’t convey how excited this made us, nothing like a little jump and down joy for bathroom improvements!

If you have any cosmetic dings in your Airstream’s plastic the combo of Great Stuff (which unless a deep gap you probably won’t need) and Triple Flex with a little elbow grease and you’ll be amazed. It was the single most we-can’t-believe-it-looks-good-as-new thing we did of the entire renovation.

The end.

a scenic drive..state route 254

0

State route 254, also called Avenue of the Giants parallels Hwy 101, winding through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It is an unbelievably beautiful drive and was originally built as a stagecoach and wagon road in the 1880′s. Along the route there are several spots to access Hwy 101 if you should want to jump back on and/or enter the park via a different point. Along the Avenue are 8 official Auto Tour Stops with interpretive panels and points of interest. Aside from these official 8 there are numerous places all along the route to pull over and take photos or hike into the woods a bit. Founders Grove was one of our favorite stops along the route, it is a 1/2 mile trail and is where the Dyerville Giant can be seen along with other marked points and information explaining the climate, etc. within the forest. Even though it is only a half mile we spent a nice amount of time walking the trail, reading the information booklet provided and is a great spot for photos, so you might want to schedule extra time for this particular stop.

Along this route you also go through various tiny towns (between Pepperwood & Phillipsville) including Redcrest, Weott, Myers Flat & Miranda. There are multiple campgrounds, Inns, Cottages, several Post Offices, a few cafes and gifts shops. We learned later that 20 miles North of the Avenue is a little town of Ferndale that is a true Victorian Village and has amazing architecture, old fashioned stores and is supposed to be a photographers dream. We were on the complete opposite end by the time we read about it but if you are planning a trip along the route you might want to start there (or finish there is you are coming from South to North).

Another stop 25 miles to the West of Garberville is the town of Shelter Cove. We did not venture over to this town because we had stops we wanted to make that included more highlights of the Redwoods a bit further down 101 (after the Avenue of the Giants ended). However, if you happen to travel this route during during late April and all of May you can see migrating whales just off shore. I was so bummed that we were a bit late, neither of us have ever seen whales and to be able to do so from shore would be amazing!! Shelter Cove also has black sand volcanic beaches.. which if you have never seen a black sand beach they are amazingly beautiful.

This is a beautiful drive no matter what portion you partake in or if you get to do the whole thing, the Redwoods astound and makes you stop and think about history and time and the sheer fact that we have trees 1500 + years old! We highly recommend the Avenue of the Giants!!

where to?

Travel is as personal as how you decorate your home, what you like to eat for breakfast or how you raise your kiddos. Travel with more than yourself and you’ve got compromise in your future. The hubby and I think alike on a lot of travel related/itinerary decisions.. we both seem to want to stay or move along at a similar pace, whether or not to spend the $20 to go to the top of a tower or to be more thrifty, to name a couple. But just as we have similarities, as with any couple we compromise. Anyone who travels, even if it’s vacation not RV travel deals with this.. I might want to stay somewhere longer and “dig in” deeper but he’s ready to go and unless I feel 100% I cannot go on without doing it, we’ll move along. Just as he will indulge thrifting more often than he would choose or whatever I have in my head at the time…where if given full reign he might choose a big no thank you to.

You might think travel isn’t travel if you don’t go hiking at every location you visit, or tour a museum in each big city or see what everyone else thinks you should see in each place. If you don’t like to hike and the thing a town is most known for is the trail system, don’t worry about it. Do your own thing, see what interests you and move along. Just like you might eat Count Chocula every morning for breakfast and wouldn’t dream of skipping it.. that might be the worst thing ever to the same people who think missing the great hike would be tragic. It’s personal. It’s great to try new things and if something offers even a glimmer of interest or fascination to you then jump in, you never know what will be the next great thing…but if there is zero desire, move along little doggy. If you despise cooking (for ex), you wouldn’t go on a vacation that was designed all for the wanna be chef, just as you wouldn’t do things on your travels that light no fire under you whatsoever.

Full or part time travel is full of decisions, where to go, how to go, how long to stay, what to see, do and experience. You must decide whether to plan it all, fly by the seat of your pants or a little of both. Do you want to see tons of roadside attractions and plot your drive around them , see cities you’ve always heard of, only take the backroads, or just take what comes. We do a fair amount of both. We’ve traveled a lot of our past 6 months with no set destination for the day and we’ve specifically planned stops as well. We’ve sought out certain attractions and stumbled on 90% of what we’ve seen. We’ve stayed longer in places that we loved and shorter in places we thought would be longer. Your best friend might love somewhere and you arrive and it just doesn’t rock your world. It’s ok, travel is an adventure and just like which side you part your hair on, you’re going to be as individual in how you go & see as you are with the hairbrush. Happy travels!

oregon.

When you get recommendations of must-see roads, places or things as a full or part-time RV traveler make sure you consider your source. For example..our drive/stay in Oregon. We had heard from multiple people that we must, must, absolutely must-not-miss..Hwy 101 along the coast in Oregon after our stops in Portland & Eugene. Here is where we realized our “mistake” of not taking into account who was doing the recommending. There is a huge difference between someone recommending a place they visit (a particular location) and a recommendation from a fellow RV traveler. All of the people recommending the 101 (when we later reflected) were people who went to a specific place on the 101 versus driving it without intent to stop but rather just to take in the scenery. 90% of the drive was all dense trees with zero view of anything else, no coast, no ocean, mountains, nada…until the very last few miles before entering into California. The Oregon coast is beautiful, but you need to be traveling to a specific place, spot at the beach, etc. to actually see it. So… if you’re vacationing and you drive to Coos Bay for example, you’ll be in the town and have beautiful beach and ocean views, wonderful! But… if you don’t have time scheduled to drive into this beach (or any other town/beach along this stretch of coast) you see nothing but dense forest, big difference. As full or part-time travelers there is much to see and you don’t always have time (for one reason or another) to see it all at once, you may be in an area and have only a day or two or you may only have your drive time and what you see as you pass by… hence the importance of getting a referral of what route to drive from a fellow traveler who knows that if at all possible you want the scenery out your windshield to be a good one. Food for thought.
(as noted our drive was the Southern half of the 101 in Oregon.. the Northern half could be different, we were only instructed on the stretch from Florence all the way to California)
